Peer Tutoring

Students studying in the ALTC

Meet one-on-one with a peer tutor to review class concepts, work practice problems, ask questions, and get support. Peer tutors have excelled in the courses they tutor and have been trained to use a variety of strategies to support different learning needs. Both in-person and virtual appointments are available through the Penji app

Students seeking tutoring are expected to abide by the Academic Learning & Tutoring Center's Learning Community Expectations

All in-person appointments take place in the ALTC Learning Studio, located in the basement of Howard-Tilton Memorial Library, Suite B01.

Make an Appointment

Tutoring is by appointment only. Download the Penji app and sign in with your Tulane credentials. See our Penji Help page for detailed instructions.

Appointments can be made up to 2 weeks in advance and must be requested at least 48 hours in advance. The appointment is not confirmed until it is accepted by the tutor. You will be notified by email when the tutor accepts the appointment.

There is a $25.00 no-show fee for not attending or cancelling within 24 hours of the appointment.

Appointments can be either 30 or 60 minutes and can be in-person or over Zoom.  Back-to-back appointments are not allowed. Students are limited to 120 minutes of tutoring per week.

Tutors can set up recurring appointments. Talk to your tutor if you want to meet at a regularly scheduled time each week.

The ALTC is closed for all University Holidays. In the case of a university closure, all appointments will be automatically cancelled. We will work to reschedule appointments once the university reopens.

Prepare for Success

To get the most out of your session and maximize your time with the tutor, please indicate what you wish to cover when prompted during the scheduling process. Once the appointment is confirmed, you can use the Chat function in your appointment to share relevant materials with your tutor prior to the appointment.

Come to the session prepared, having completed any assigned reading or homework, and with specific questions or problems for the tutor. Bring all relevant notes, textbooks, or supplementary materials. The tutor will not work on any graded assignment or homework but can work parallel problems as examples. Tutors cannot give you any course notes, old quizzes or tests, or graded work. (See the Tulane Code of Academic Conduct.)

Be engaged and responsive during the session. Your tutor will guide you in discovering the answers and facilitate your learning by suggesting different ways to study, take notes, and use your textbook. Learning is an active process that involves focus, practice, and purpose.

Tutoring is not a substitute for attending class and is most effective when it is part of a robust study plan that includes attending class, taking advantage of TA and Professor’s office hours, SI sessions, and regular review of the material.

No Show & Cancellations

We encourage students to reschedule appointments rather than cancel them. If you choose to cancel your appointment, it must be cancelled more than 24 hours in advance, or you will be charged a $25 no-show fee. The tutor cannot waive the no-show fee.

Rescheduling is not allowed less than 24 hours in advance of the appointment.

3 no-shows within a 60-day period will result in a loss of tutoring privileges for the duration of the semester. SI sessions and drop-in services will still be available.

Tutors rarely cancel appointments, but if it is necessary, they will attempt to reschedule or schedule you with another tutor.

If inclement weather, internet, or power outages disrupt your session, your tutor will attempt to reschedule as quickly as possible.

If you are diagnosed with COVID, or other infectious disease, please contact your tutor immediately to reschedule or move your appointment online.
